I own since Oktober 2002 a 1982 Saab 900i, Non Turbo, Automatic, LHD, second owner from new, up to 100,000km always maintained at major Saab Workshops.
Mileage is now 109,780km, was 98,501km when I got hands on the Saab.
Since I own the Saab I did following work beside the normal service work:
- radiator, waterpump, t-stat, thermo switch, all-coolant hoses, coolant, expansion tank, filler cap.
- two times head gasket job.
- replaced all hoses and grommets of the vaccuum system.
- replaced the cold starting valve, thermo time switch cold starting, fuel metering distributor, warm up valve, airflow meter, fuel lines injection.
- all plugs, HT-leads, dizzy cap/rotor, coil.
And much more very small bits.
Saab is still starting very bad if cold, high on fuel (15-17mpg), leaking oil (main pulley seal), 'burning' spark plugs like ice melting in the sun (NGK BPR6ES, need to be renewed after only 5,000kms!). Injectors will be renewed if the right parts number is found.
FOR the Saab: nearly no rust, freshly done headliner, leather, stylish, interesting design, spacy luggage room, rare in Luxembourg/Europe, FUN to drive (if there's no break down...)
Against the Saab: very high running and maintaining costs, more expensive than a bigger Jaguar (comparing the driven mileage), unreliable comparing with a Mini or a Rover (infamous for unreliable cars) both type of cars I still own and enjoy. (More than the sad Saab at the moment...will be changed)
BTW I replaced all brake parts: discs, hoses, master cylinder, brake pads. And renewed the front brake caliper on both sides. This type of work I would do to every car if new in my collection. Just to be on the safe side.
I like to know if these symptoms are normal for a Saab of that age and mileage (IMHO low mileage). I've heard a lot stories about Saabs with more than 400,000kms on the clock and no major work was done acheeving this. Only the normal service work was undertaken.
