Brown residue from A/C system ... what does this mean?

So I'm working on the a/c and when removing the receiver I noticed brown residue on the inlet side (output hose fitting was clean). It looked like a watery mud. Does this indicate that the dessicant bag broke? Also, the receiver started bubbling browninsh-green oily liquid, what was this? Dirty R-12 boiling? Lastly, should an A/C vacuum have cleaned the remainder of the system, or should I now be flushing out the system?
Thanks in advance for the A/C help, and don't worry, I'm being enviromentally friendly and capped the questionable receiver.
