1. You don't have to apologize to anyone for a six month or one year absence from the swinging, swirly world of Radio. If your next radio employer askes you what you did during the interval, tell them you explored an opportunity to own your own business. You're not lying, right? Besides, it sounds ambitious and well-rounded. It shows you don't have stars in your eyes and are looking for an environment to facilitate your own personal success.

2. This will sound a little harsh but no one can push you around unless you let 'em. If you are the "doormat" of your present job, it is up to you to make sure it doesn't happen in the next job.

3. You risk nothing by leaving your present gig. You are less then 30 years old. When you leave, two things can happen and both of them are good. Your potential absence may make their hearts grow fonder and they may offer you a raise and/or promotion to stay. If you do as much as you say, they will be sorry to see you go. OR they will just give you a pat on the back and say goodbye, whereupon you will learn they have no respect for you. Then you can leave with a clear conscience and let them flounder without you.

4. While there are many peoiple clamoring for radio jobs, few of them have good stable track records in the business. Most have no experience or are starry-eyed slackers. I'm betting you would be an asset to any radio outfit, no matter how big or small the market. Everybody wants someone who is a hard worker. Eventually, all employers get sick of the cheap, revolving-door labor. I guarantee the culture at another station will be better than the one you're at now.

Take it from one who knows. Good luck.

JD
