What'll build up aluminum (inside a turn signal stalk) Posted by mag [Email] (#1906) [Profile/Gallery] (more from mag) on Thu, 7 Aug 2003 12:59:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm looking for a material, like an adhesive, which will tenatioulsly adhere to aluminum. JB Weld didn't hold.
The situation will be obvious from what follows. The recommendation may well be "Give Up. Spend the bucks on a new part." But now I'm curious.
I opened a turn signal indicator to see why it pops back to neutral. Inside is a shaped aluminum block with machined ledges. Deflecting the turn stalk moves a spring loaded wheel along the face of the block until it rests within a ledge, with the lip of the ledge curved just high enough to overcome the forces that want to pop the wheel off of that ledge.
Over time a channel is worn into this block where the steel wheel travels, and the lip of the ledge is removed. So nothing holds the wheel, and therefore the stalk, in place.
I degreased this block, built it up with JB Weld, let it cure, and remachined the contours with a flexy shaft tool. The JB Weld failed to adhere to the aluminum under the pressures of the wheel when the device was reassembled.
So what will stick to aluminum under these conditions?
