Freon R12 doesn't wear out, or mysteriously disappear. There's a leak - that's where it goes.
Had my '90 SPG fixed early this spring - had a leaky "blow-out valve" on the compressor. Then serviced with R12 and checked. Hope it remains good!
I was told the R134A conversion will result in hoses leaking within a year, and they recommended to stay with R12. I did. I provided a used good part ($ 0.00), and the total was just under $200. Hope it remains good!
I bought the car with non-working A/C, and budgeted +/- $1200.00 if necessary. Hope it remains good.
Suggestions: Stay with R12 if feasible. Take it to an Air Conditioning/radiator shop with lots of experience and diagnostic ability! Not a repair shop which "Says" they can do A/C (they only know how to do A/C if all goes RIGHT!)! If there's an independent Saab seller in your area, find out who does his A/C work on C900's.
Lewiston Radiator in Lewiston, Maine did mine. One of the techs there has my old '89 SPG.
Best of luck. Any decent salvage units in your area?
