1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I am 'here' as well. I have heard people tell of conversions that cool well. R134 can cool better than R12. That is that it cas better thermal capacity. The only way to get here, though is to hit the proper pressure points on the curve. From what I read, the only way you will get here at idle with a C900 is if the condenser is more efficient than the existing serpentine condenser. The deal with orings is a red herring as far as keeping the freon in. Ditto on the hoses. A new rubber hose (not R134 - barrier hose) will pass R134 through it but used but still good hoses will have a nice coating of oil on them which does a nice job of sealing. To cloud things, the C900 had 2 condensers a 14" tall unit and a 12" tall unit. I do not know which was for what, but a 14" tall one will work better with R134 than a 12" tall one but not as good as a 'parallel flow' unit like most modern, well designed systems use. I will be doing this very soon and have already ordered a 14x24 parallel flow universal condenser. I'll take pics and document it as well as let you know how well it meets my expecatations. My goal is the A/C performance of my wife's 9k, though I will probably fall short of that for other reasons. If the compressor is shot and the hoses as well (mine aren't), I would suggest replacing the SS170PS (most if not all 16V cars have this one which is not well suited to a conversion) with a sanden 5 cylinder R134 compressor. These are cheaper but will probably require you to MAKE barrier hoses to fit up to the proper bits. You will probably have to re-use the long line from the compressor to the condesner or have a custom made. They all have redesigned seals for R134 and work well. These are generally used on Hot Rods to provide the A/C for these projects. These companies also provide a source of fittings and barrier hose. Copmpanies I got info from are hotrodair.com and vintageair.com, though I got my condenser and lines from another outfit. All of this will be in the report as soon as I get it done. If I can get through it, I'll have it done by this w/e before I leave for a bus trip for 2 weeks. Otherwise, I'll have it done sometime in Sept.
