people have done it. against all advice, and still succeded. unless you are in a situation that absolutely prevents you from doing so, pull the engine. that being said. you can drop the trans that way. dont forget to get the clutch spacer in while you can. u also have to pull the cross member. in reality it is almost the same amount of work. you may even be able to get by without pulling ball joints with susp loose. the differenc is you don't have to do in on your back under the car. be ready for a taper pin hassle. actually easier to pull other coupling. put car in reverse then loosen and moove shifter to 5th. standard hydraulic jack will drop it. be careful that all bolts are out. don't break anything. easier to work on out of the car. a REAL man can rebuild the trans while it is IN the car....:) ( it can be done....but why bother...kind of like dropping the trans out the bottom)
