Hey Brian-

Welcome to the convertible family! I too am a '87 owner (and am partial to them, it's weird, but true), and can try and help you out. I had the good fortune (or maybe lack there of) of being around these cars when new, and I have had MORE than my share of Saab Gaurd Alarm problems.

The short and skiny is this, you car didn't come with a fob or "keyless" type alarm activation from the factory like the later ones did. You simply push the rocker switch between your seats to 'on' and away you go, with the time delay as set and described in the manual you have.

If someone has spliced into your harness,I would suspect that the factory unit may have died (happened all the time on the early units), or, they may have may simply tapped off the alarms hot wire to power up something else. Tapped wires and black tape always scare me! The fuel cutoff, is interesting, but again not factory, but if it works, why not?

You can always buy an aftermarket, with a nifty proximity sensor (for when the top's down, won't let hands in), for pretty cheap.

***Make sure the installer knows that you have time delayed interior lights, as this requires a certain system (usually a bit more expensive), trust me I speak from experience, as I had to have my interior lights hard wired after the fact, due to a wonderful butcher job the alarm shop wouldn't admit to.

Hopefully this helps, but as you said before, it could potentially be a nightmare, for the fact that old alarms + lots of old wires = many six packs!

;-)~

Is the car red?
