although it's not limited to SPGs in '89.
LH 2.4 ECUs from '88 through '90 non-turbo 16-valvers will drop in and work as will 900 Turbo ECUs from '89 through at least '91. 9000T ECUs up through '90 will work, too.
The solid-state relay (transistor) that the ECU uses to complete the circuit to energize the fuel pump relay tends to get beaten by a backpulse when the relay is deenergized. When you replace your ECU, replace the fuel pump and System relays - they have snubbers to deal with the backpulse, and the snubbers tend to weaken with age.
If you want to keep the fuel mapping the same if you put in one from a non-turbo, swap the EPROM from your old ECU into the new one.
After the ECU in my '89 SPG died, I ran an ECU from a 90 900S for about 6 months before replacing it with one from a '90 900T. I tried one from an '89 9kT for a while and it worked with no problems. All SAAB LH 2.4 ECUs use the same microprocessor, so the firmware in the EPROMs will run the same.
