1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I'm looking for some advice on the purchase of a project car/Sunday driver. I already own an '87 900s 4d with at least 250k miles on it, the motor is failing but I've done a lot of work (all DIY) to the rest of the car in the four years I've had it. I found locally a replacement: an '87 900 red turbo conv cheap (talked him down to $1200, may or may not be worth it). First, the good:
1. New black top.
2. Engine runs very strong.
3. Transmission shifts smoothly in gears 1-4. Does not pop out of reverse.
4. No tears in tan leather.
Of course, at this price there's many things on the bad list (abridged):
5. Cracked windshield: it doesn't look like my 900 sedan can donate this, am I right?
6. Exhaust is bad and appears to be falling off: again, no donation possible, right?
7. Handbrake cables broken and bad brakes: no problem with donating almost new parts from the sedan, and I'd donate the entire wheel, axle, ball joints, etc. assemblies (mostly new) as a unit while I'm in there.
8. I couldn't get the transmission into 5th gear and reverse clunks a bit going in: I think this might be the shifter, I need to go back and check to see if the lever for reverse is broken and locking me out of fifth. Any other thoughts here? This is the biggest sticking point. My donor car has a decent transmission whose only problem is jumping out of reverse. But I don't really want to buy a car and pull the motor right away, I don't mind pulling the motor on my donor car to spend a few years cleaning it up and getting it ready for use in the convertable.
9. The top does not operate: I was told it leaks fluid. I'm completely unfamiliar with the top. Where can I add fluid and what is the fluid to add? What else should I check here? I'm guessing the pistons are leaking.
10. The current owner is one of those back yard car dealers so its useless to ask him questions. I purchased my current sedan from one of these guys four years ago for $500. I understand the implications of dealing with these shifty characters. If I decide against the purchase, I'd also be happy to pick it up for one you folks if you want it (with a donation to Saabnet because it didn't hit the classifieds).
I appreciate all comments.
