The ignition switch has a mechanism that makes you put the car in reverse before you can take out the key. I assume you have been doing this?
Any way, the 'power' for the mechanism is a small hairpin spring that is prone to breakage. I suggest removal of the interlock. First remove 97 layers of plastic to get to where you can actually see the metal box that holds the ignition switch and shift lever. Then unbolt this from the floor so you can turn it over to undo the nuts holding the cover on.
Remove the cover and inside you will find that the ignition switch is held in place by 3 triangular shaped bolts. I have been able to remove these with 2 large screw drivers and a channel lock. Your method may vary. Internal consumption of screw drivers with double vodka may help.
Once you have this out, remove the spring and the little gear drive. Reassemble with real nuts.
Hopefully this will cure the problem.
