This afternoon I had a strange experience. We're enjoying a nice "Indian Summer" here in Central Ohio. Having driven the '87 900T covertible on a fall foliage drive yesterday I thought I'd take it to the office today, too, so I could enjoy some great "top down" drive time.

[Background info: I have a small leak in the radiator. I have a new one already but just haven't had time to put it in yet and I used Bar's Leak as a temporary measure.]

So here I am on the interstate merging from one highway onto the other at about 20 MPH. I thought I smelled coolant. But it had a weird odor to it.

Next thing I know there is what appears to be smoke billowing out of the mount for my rear view mirror! My God, I thought, my mirror light has shorted and the car is going to catch on fire! I turned the interior light switch to the "0" position thinking this might cut off any electricity going to the light's connector up inside the windshield frame. The "smoke" gradually went away. Yeah, I don't have a fire extinguisher in this car...but I will before I drive it again.

I drove the rest of the @ 15 mostly highway miles home a little cautiosly but every other gauge and system seemed normal. When I slowed down upon entering my subdivision and then pulled into my driveway, I immediately grabbed a torx screwdriver set and pulled the mirror down, thinking I'd find charred wires or a burned plug. Nope. Nothing. The wiring looks good. The mirror mount doesn't look so good since I scratched it in my haste to get the mirror off, though.

So I opened the hood and there was a powerful odor of coolant as well as some obvious stains indicating my radiator had let loose again. What I have figured out is this:

The radiator sprung another leak and, since I was driving and not sitting motionless, the air flow under the hood carried the fumes (smoke, so I thought) up through the A pillars and the only exit was the mirror mount!

I was relieved that the car wasn't going to burn to the ground but of course the radiator must be changed. I can't wait any longer. Looks like I'll take a day off of work next week to do it.

Just thought you'd appreciate this story. It's always fun to laugh after the fact when something like this happens....
