Thanks Alex, I guess that would be a good idea. The reason I didn't do it is that when the garage changed all the parts last year (ECU, lambda sensor, regrounded earths) I took the car back to them about five or six times when the light kept coming back on and they pulled the codes but they kept saying they were "random and didn't really point to anything" although I foolishly didn't ask what they were. The reason I think it may be the hall sensor is that when it fails to start there is no power on the coil. The other reason is that it appears from trawling the net that the hall sensor often fails when it's hot. The EZK system is also used on Volvo's and there are a few cases on their forums where it fails when the car has been parked and the engine heat gets to it causing it to fail, then it works again after the whole thing's cooled down an hour or so later (exactly what I appear to have).Apparently a good indication is no tachometer needle movement during cranking (starting) which I've yet to check. I always seemed to get more CE light occurences in the summer (I live in London) It also talks about kickback during starting (cranking) which I also sometimes get. You're right, I could be following a total red herring, so I will definitely pull the codes and let you know what happens.
