Always gap new plugs - 100% of the time Posted by vsfoxe [Email] (#1025) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vsfoxe) on Sat, 8 Nov 2003 19:59:07 In Reply to: Follow thoughts/question, Ovid, Sat, 8 Nov 2003 15:31:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Unless you'll be satisfied with "That'll probably be close enough gap".
I know it's different with cars, but here's an example from the 15 years I sold parts in a motorcycle/snowmobile/atv/boat dealership:
Some snowmobiles from SkiDoo, Yamaha, and Polaris all used the same NGK plug (BR9ES). SkiDoo gap was .018", Yamaha gap was .030", and Polaris was .035". (approximate, from memory)
Same manufacturer, same plug, same box, 3 different gaps depending on application. Even if I got the plugs from SkiDoo, or Yamaha, or Polaris (OEM) they were likely to need gapping prior to installation.
Not all plugs that fit our 8 or 16-valve Saabs were produced just for these motors. If the plug is used in more than one application, how could they possibly be gapped "correctly" for each one?
Best to check/gap before installation. It's not hard.
