Focus on whether the fuel pump is running. Have some one turn the key to on, (but not start so the engine doesn't crank) while you listen for a high pitched hum at the underside of the rear of the car. If you hear that sound, your fuel pump is running. It should go off after a few seconds if the engine is not running, thats normal. My pump cost about $600 from an indie a few years back, fwiw.
If you have no hum, then the pump is probably shot. Sometimes they can be made to run again if you thump on the pump housing with a rubber mallet, this moves the pump armature off of a bad spot that prevents it from starting and running when the key is turned on.
The fuel pump relay could also be bad, remove it and try jumping the terminals, if it starts, its a bad relay nad thats a chaep part (maybe $45). But you really need a Bentley manual to do this right and prevent causing more damage, try a library or B&N.
