It started as a once-a-week mysterious stall that would happen at any time (idling, in traffic, under boost etc.). Otherwise the car ran prefectly. This went on for a few weeks before the car started misfiring and backfiring under boost. A day or two later it would stall or backfire under any load. I should add that during this whole time the car could always be instantly restarted without difficulty. Eventually it would only start, idle for a few seconds, and then die.

I used the tests in Bentley and the bad unit failed (I think it was in the voltage rise and drop test you describe but i'm not certain). I also hooked up a timing light and watched the spark during the misfiring/ backfiring/stalling episodes. It became erratic or disappeared entirely.

Replaced with a used unit from an 80s VW Rabbit ($15) and no problems since.
