I have an 88 900T and my wife has a 2000 9-5. Both are 5 speeds.

I put about 6k/year on my car and have 1 y.o. hakkapelita studded on the front and 2-3 year old ones on the back.

I just put new 16" studded gislaved nordfrost 3 tires on my wifes 9-5 and drove it 120 miles in a snowstorm.

It is an excellent capable snow beast and a little better than my 900 for most drivers. New tires make it unstoppable.

For inexperienced / non-enthusiast drivers, the 9-5 ads ABS and traction control which could be good benefits. Since I am careful and take pride in precise winter driving, TCS and ABS are not selling points to me.

Of course, for an enthusiast, the 900 would probably be a tie if it had brand new studded tires on it also.

If 9-5s were cheap, I'd drive one. I like having a car like my 900 that is extremely capable, yet safe and inexpensive. I buckle up tight and don't worry about if I wrecked my car like I would if I had a more expensive 9-5.
I can afford a used 9-5, but I like the classics too much to part with it. They are a good value for the performance and safety provided.

I think the Gislaved are a little better in soggy snow (more sipes), and the Nokian haks a little better in packed and crunchy snow. Both are good on ice and fresh snow. Both seem to be a great snow tire choice.
