buy an 88 tranny from Saab, it will have the older (smaller) bearing.
The pinion bearing size doesn't really mean a whole heck of a lot since I have seen many 89 and up trannies go bad.
It all comes down to replacing the transmission oil on a regular basis and not crunching the reverse gear when removing ignition key.
Yes, you could go with any of the newer transmissions for your 88, but you might end up paying the core charge if they find out that the one you return is an 88.
And no, they wont warranty the labor for R/R if you have someone else than the dealer installing the transmission.
