Okay, 89 900S 170k. I get back to college, put a new battery in, she starts right up. Now, the past week or two in the Twin Cities have been *frigid*. Since getting a new battery, the car has been fine -- starting fine, no problems. I drove it last Thursday, supposedly one of the coldest nights in the last few years, no problems starting.
Today, though, I go out early afternoon to start the car and move it off the street (due to an impending parkin ban), and it won't start. I crank it and I crank it and nothing. I try giving it no gas, I try giving it lots of gas, I let it sit for half an hour several times to let it recover in case I had flooded it. I went out and tried 5 or 6 times, each time having long "sessions" of trying to start it, letting it rest a few minutes, trying, resting, etc. Nothing. Eventually, around 4:00pm, I just got some friends to help me push it into a college parking lot (conveniently only about 100 feet away) so it won't be towed and impounded tonight.
While it was turning over, it had a little (very little) sputtering, a very little ignition. It'd fire once or twice, and then nothing. The whole time I was doing this, it would periodically fire once or twice. But it wouldn't catch, despite my best-timed accelerator pressing attempts. Sometimes if I just floored it, it would sputter *more* (i.e. come closer to starting) and it tried its best to start.
I tried putting Drygas in it, too, although only late in the afternoon. I don't think it had a chance to get pumped into the fuel lines but it was getting late and the battery was getting worn down, so we just pushed it.
What could this be? I fear that it could possibly be a wide range of things. It seems to me like it's not getting enough gas, but who knows what it is. I can hear the fuel pump run for a second after I turn the key off, so I don't think that's the problem. It wasn't even terribly cold today (high of 18 F).
I spent the afternoon terribly frustrated; I guess it's all part and parcel of having a 15 year old car, but this one has just always been so good to me -- never had a no-start situation (well, excluding a dead battery) in nearly 41,000 miles.
Thanks in advance,
Tim B.
