Alt belt noise sounds just like rod knock! Just sharing

My '84 n/a 8V has developed a bit of noise over the last year that I suspected was rod knock because of the 500K+ milage on this engine. I thought I had traced the noise to right behind the balancer with a scope and that led me to believe it was rod knock. I haven't been driving it much for the last couple of weeks because the noise had become really loud right around 1500rpm and I didn't want to be stuck somewhere in it. I have instead been driving the SPG which blew a head gasket on Sunday and forced me back into "the knocker" while I fix the SPG. Today I was at the parts store and while backing up the noise stopped and the charge light came on. Yep broke a belt. I looked at the belt and noticed that it's missing all but maybe 4-5 teeth and those teeth were all together. Since I was at the parts store I picked up another belt and after installing it the engine is dead quiet again. Best day ever! I can't believe I've been thinking I had to send the car out to pasture for an $8 part.
It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how many years I've worked on engines and how many ASE certs I have on the wall....I can still miss the most simple things ever.
