That's the source of a lot of shifting difficulties. When they get old, the pilot bearings tend to bind, so the primary shaft still wants to turn with the engine when the clutch pedal is fully depressed.
Most of the 900s that I've had the clutch out of (including my own and the ones that I pulled parts from) have had pilot bearings that you couldn't turn by hand.
