FWIW, there have been several posts over the last year about internal corrosion in the battery cables. The corroded cable strands mentioned in the posts weren't readily apparent until the cable insulation was stripped back.
Note #2 sure makes it sound like the brushes on the voltage regulator are worn down past their service limit. My '88 900S (200k miles) had the same symptom before it stranded me in a heavy downpour.
Any belt slippage?
