Hmm. It certainly sounds like it could be a wiring problem. I don't know where you live, but in sub freezing weather, these old wires' insulation can become extremely brittle. I live in Boston and last weekend I noticed that one of my cooling fans decided to fall off the radiator, and while I was fixing it, my big elbow smooshed and broke the wires to the TPS. So it does happen.
The main thing is to not lose sight of the big picture. For example, don't be quick to conciously link (I know it's hard not to do this) the fact that the vehicle started after squirting some fuel in the manifold, and assume you have a fuel system problem. The fact that there's fuel at the fuel rail would seem to contradict this.
On the other hand, it might not be a bad idea to start with a basic tune-up (fuel/air filters, plugs, wires, cap and rotor) if this hasn't been performed recently. Dump a bottle of techron in the tank to clean out the injectors while you're at it.
However, the wire wiggling could be very telling. I would suggest that you first start examining your major ground points in the car. The one that seems prone to problems is right near the bottom of the radiator by the battery. This area gets corroded and can cause all sorts of electrical opens. Another ground that can cause major headaches is the ground wire between the alternator and the engine block. This breaks due to vibration from the alternator. Then, there's another ground in and around the intake manifold; I've had issues with that one too!
You're probably getting my point here. You'll just have to be persistent, logical, and apply sound troubleshooting technique to solve this.
I hope this helps, and good luck !
