Thanks for all your thoughtful responses! I think this decision would be a a no brainer (keep the 87) if the bodies were equivalent. Unfortunately the Northeast winter salt has started some rusting on the 87. I'll have to go under and look around the wheel arches and under the drive shafts, but I already know there are other areas of concern. The "A frame" attachement area behind the battery area was getting rusted a long time back. I had a patch welded in to strengthen it. Also, one door pillar is getting some rusting. On the other hand, the quality of the undercoating was pretty poor on the 91. I'll have to give both bodies a thorough going over.
On the points about about the CIS system being easier to diagnose and repair, I wholeheartedly agree! Never been stuck with it, which I can't say for the 2.4.2 LH in the 91. The LH is an all or none system and can fail without warning. When the CIS has a problem it keeps running, giving me time to find out what's bugging it--a much friendlier way to be in my opinion. As far as the tranny, I think the extra power of the 91 2.1 engine is what has stressed the pinion bearing, even with the beefed up bearing. My 87 never had enough power to hurt itself. That tranny will probably go forever, purring down the highway at 2700 RPM going 65 MPH.
Thanks again everyone.
