TML, SPGs were produced from 1985 thru 1991 in the USA.

Basically, the SPG has everything as the 900 turbo (of the same year) plus the 3-spoke wheels and the body cladding. 85 only came in Black with Sierra Tan leather interior, 86 & 87 are Edwardian Grey with Buffalo Grey interior, 88 & 89 are either Black or Edwardian Grey with Buffalo Grey leather interior. The 1990 SPGs are Black or Talladega Red with Buffalo Grey interior and 91s are Black, Red, or Beryl Green with Buffalo Grey interiors.

Which year were best? That is a matter of opinion. I have an 85 SPG and two 89 SPGs. I also have other classic 900 turbos from 81 thru 91. The important thing is the condition of the car. If you are buying the car from a Saab enthusiast it will probably be running okay to good. If you are buying from a dealer / ebay / non-Saab enthusiast it will probably need at least a tune-up, including setting the base boost. The only performance differance between an SPG and a turbo of the same year was a slightly modified APC box from the factory starting in 87. The 85 & 86 SPGs are rated at 160 HP, the 87 / 88 / 89 SPGs are rated at 165 HP. All of these SPGs came with a T3 Garrett turbo, although water cooled, starting in 88. The 90 & 91s came with Mitsubishi TE-05 turbos, and are rated at 175 HP. The Mitsu turbos are smaller and spool up faster.

The 88 and up SPGs had larger wheel lip moulding. 89 and up have leather wrapped steering wheels and leather shift boots.

The 88 SPG may or may not have passive seat belts. Both my 89 SPGs had them and I swapped them over to the regular seat belts. The 85 thru 88 had the LH 2.2 jetronic fuel system. The 89 thru 91 have the LH 2.4 system. The LH 2.4 allows you to pull stored CEL, check engine light, codes.

The 85 and 86 were very similar cars, although the 85 APC box is under the back seat, the 86 is in the engine bay, as are all the later cars. The 85 has a one-year only distributor and APC box. Neither the 85 or 86 came with lowered suspension, as did all the later SPGs. All SPGs came with Gas Shocks and front & rear sway bars. The body cladding is the same on the 85 & 86 cars. 87 thru 91 had the new style bumpers that had differant bumper "extensions" from the regular turbos and the 85/86 SPGs. The body cladding panels between the wheels is interchangeable between all year cars.

(As a side note, the rear bumper extensions on the SPG from 87 to 91 is differant from the SE or Special Edition convertibles and the 88 SiS or Springtime in Sweden convertible.)

There were also two "airflow" options, neither came stock on SPGs. The early airflow kit included fiberglass pieces similar in style to the SPG cladding. It came with 4 wheel lip mouldings, the 6 panels between the wheels and bumper extentions, lower spoilers (front & rear), covers for the air vents in the rear quarter panels and a rear decor panel between the rear tail lights. The condition of the car will determine its worth. Many SPGs have been modified, some have been driven very hard. Good luck with your search.
