Russell, Do you have the Saab transmission manual too? It shows how to set your pinion gear depth. It can be done without the special Saab tool, just think it out and do the math, then measure carefully. Pinion gear depth is adjusted by the shims under the bearing retainer...
The shims on top of the pinion nut are to place the whole gear cluster in the proper position...To measure this, I took a 1/4" rod, cut to the specified min spec (7.677"), then checked the clearance between it and a straightedge across the face with feeler gauges..that will give you the necessary shim thickness (maximum, you can go .004" less).
The Hayes manual in combination with the factory manual is the way to go...
BTW, Do you still have your Buick GS? I just bought another '66 GS...401, 4 speed! Oh Yeah!!!
