Head gasket is suppose to block off some cooling channels to make the coolant flow in a certain direction.
The new head gasket have the same shape as the original one.
I have never heard an official explanation to why this happens so much more to the 2.1L.
I know that the coolant that was used in early 90 was different than before and after (goldish color) but you would think that the same coolant was used in the 2.0l engine too?
The engine block cast is different compared to the 2.0l and it might be as easy as that the casting produces some chemical reaction that doesn't happen in the 2.0l.
Or it could be that they used another blend of cast iron/raw material for those 2.1L
