Hey Pat,
I figured you're the man for this question - I rebuilt my tranny a year or so ago. I cheaped out and didnt get a stack depth spacer, and just used the old shims that came out with the gears. Now the tranny is starting to get whiny. This car is a 900S, so its not like I'm throwing a ton of torque through it. What causing the whine? As I understood it, when a pinion bearing goes, the main shaft moves up and down and lets the gears get closer and whine. With a new pinion bearing in there, and (I assume) the shaft not moving up and down, the gears are out of alignment front and back wise, right? Is this imminent failure waiting to happen?
Thanks,
Campbell
