both times, when fans were running immediately with ignition power, and also running for some minutes after shutdown, the temp. switch in the radiator was the problem. I believed both times it failed "open", but can't swear to that. Makes sense....high temp causing the bimetallic switch to expand & open. This is the best fail safe from a design viewpoint, so mucho fans is clearly preferred to no fans..
Getting that big switch out was tricky. Seems I removed the shroud for the turbo intercooler on one car...something else on my 90 900S. The socket size is large and an oddball IIRC. You will lose some coolant so be quick about it. Once the new one is in you will need to bleed out the system following the Bentley procedure.
To confirm this theory, just pull the leads off the temp switch & jumper them together. If the fans stop, you found it.
