Travis,
Is it the original transmission? How many miles? Did it have any whine in the higher gears, or any other shifting difficulties prior to this happening? The "howling" part you describe makes it seem like the pinion bearing went as Alex pointed out, though you 'usually' get a little advance warning of some whining before hand.
I don't know if the chain would cause the howling first, though I suppose anything about to fail might. This is not an expert opinion by any means, and I'm sure someone could refute this logic, but I would "think" that were it the chain, it would seize up the lower pinion as it fell as opposed to the higher pinion. it would be the seizing of the lower pinion that caused the front wheels to skid. therefore you might be able to tell it's the chain by whether there was any difference between the clutch being in or out. were it the chain that seized on the bottom pinion, then I would think the top would spin freely and there would be no difference as to the cluch's engagement. just a theory that may well be wrong.
But if it's the pinion bearing that went, which happens in older 900's, then it would a require a new/rebuilt transmission. $800-$1,600 for a rebuild, $1,000-$1,500 labor to install.
Regards,
Brian
