On a hunch, I called International Saab in N.Va looking for service records on my used 900S (I'm the 2nd owner). I was specifically trying to find out when/if the headgasket was replaced as this is a major issue with the 2.1L engines. Sure enough, the car was brought in for a warranty head gasket replacement at 45K miles back in 1997.

Doesn't 45K seem pretty early for a head gasket to pop? Maybe a lot of stop-go on the DC Beltway? Anyway I'm thrilled that the original isn't still in there as this has been a cause of concern for me since I bought her at 72K miles (now has 103K).

Doe anyone have a 2.1L with a replacement gasket fail yet? When? I've heard the replacement gasket used for these repairs had been revised to correct the problems the original gasket had. Townsend has a bunch of info on this.

As for now, I am using Dexcool (orange stuff) coolant after flushing all the old crap out and I have a 87C thermo/fan switch turning on my fans earlier than the stock 92C, as many have recommended.

BTW: 18K miles on the Dexcool with (knock on wood) no leaking anywhere.
