David,

Hi. That steering wheel emblem is the same as my '84 S's steering wheel. You simply put a screwdriver in there at the edge, work it down and under steering wheel opening's "lip" which surrounds the emblem (emblem is a flat disc). Pry one edge up. Emblem should come out rather easily after that.

And you're correct: the emblem's radius is about 1/4" or more bigger than the radius of the hole in the steering wheel. This is what keeps it in there so snug.

The steering wheel nut is located down inside the wheel, recessed, so you'll need a 3" socket extension at least. The socket size is 22mm, if I remember right.
