This is a warning to all those who have rusted away heat shields and think it's not worth worrying about. I had an exhaust leak at the header pipe to cat convertor connection. Pulling old stuff out noticed my heat shield was completely eaten away with rust. Ordered new shield and went about tearing apart interior to get at shield screws. I found the head had melted away the plastic covering to the insulation under the plastic wiring channel and had started to singe the insulation itself. No damage yet to the wiring, but I wonder what would have happened had the exhaust leak not happened. I haven't owned the car very long and frankly never looked at the heat shield any time I was under the car. If you haven't looked yet at the condition of your heat shield, take 10 minutes to get the car up on stands and take a peek.
