The basic wiring for the stock radio was set up where the front speakers were powered by the old radio (head unit) and the rear speakers by a small amplifier (under 10 watts). I think in 1992 the amp is under the rear seat (at least in the convertible it is) not positive in the sedan.

All modern head units are *much* more powerful and deliver power out to all 4 speakers usually listed at around 20 watts. I would skip the stock 13 year old amplifier as it is really a joke in comparison to the power that modern head units deliver.

Instead, I would run new speaker wire to each speaker -- there are no wires that go directly to the rear speakers without going through the old amp and new wires will make a noticeable improvement over the stock wires for your new speakers. Since you have to take out your old front speakers, running new wires is an easy job.

Hint - run the speaker wires down along the drivers side to the rear speakers under the carpet - remove the trim along the door sill to get under carpet. I used a very thin coat hanger to thread down the very left side of the dash using the left front speaker opening and tied the speaker wires to a loop i hanger, taped it and pulled the speaker wire through. Patience is a virtue here. When I moved my stereo to the lower position, I realized you could also drop the speaker wires straight down on the very back left in the head unit cavity when you take it out. The wires come out by the accelerator. Be very careful to secure the wires if you go this route to keep them away from the pedals. Zipties are helpful when installing a stereo.

Be careful taking out the front speakers....do a search on TSN for stereo or speakers etc. for some tips. Very easy to break the clips that hold the speakers in, need to align the defroster tube. To unscrew the hex bolt holding the speakers in, I found it is easiest on the convertible to use the right size hex bit from my "socket screwdriver set" and clamp a vise grip to it so it is a right angle and unscrew it this way since there is no room for a screwdriver becasue of the window angle.
