Chip,
You didn't say what your 900 is (8V or 16V). I'm guessing yours is a 16V, since I haven't seen an 8V with a resonator (but I'm not an authority).
Mom's 1990 900 base (16V) had this happen. She just had the muffler shop do exactly what you asked about--replace the resonator with a straight pipe from the middle muffler on back. To our surprise, the exhaust note is more "throaty." I like it!
It also seems to change pitch as the car warms up. When you shift at 3000-3500 rpm while the car is warming up, the exhaust note has a little sharp "BLAAAAT" sound. It's hard to describe...did I mention I like it! :)
Shifting at this rpm range AFTER warmup doesn't cause the "BLAAAAT" noise. My guess is that the exhaust expands a bit when it warms and the joints tighten up and maybe the resonance changes, but I'm no acoustic engineer, so not sure on why it does this.
It's not very loud or unbearable, but you might get a few looks every now and then.
Her '90 900 with new catalytic convertor, stock middle muffler, and no resonator sounds meaner and more throaty than my '84S (8V) with stock muffler and gutted catalytic convertor (no resonator, of course).
