I have used another brand, Red Tek that works very, very well. The reason I did this instead of converting to 134 was just for a temporary fix because I didn't have the time to change out my dryer and all of the hoses. Before anyone lectures me I know the hoses don't have to be changed but as the car is a 1987 I was going to do it on principle because I have a small leak.

Anyway, the Red Tek stuff is EXTREMELY cold, almost painfully so. It is not flammable and one of the wholesalers of this sells it on Ebay. The down side is the price. It is not cheap. He sells a kit that is made of two cans of this plus a compressor fouling remover / lubricator. The installation was a piece of cake. After having your old refrigerant legally removed (no comment....) you can add this to your system while your compressor is running by jumpering the terminals on the receiver/dryer which is just behind your passenger side headlight. This is not, I realize, the professional way to charge a system but it is safe and does work for a DIY application. I have a friend who used to do alot of HVAC work in buildings and in automotive applications who helped me do this the first time, which was last year. I had to buy one more can to add this summer due to my slow leak. Next year I will convert to R134...heck even if I still have the slow leak the stuff is alot cheaper to buy then the R12 substitutes.
