1. If the static seems to 'move' with the music or has a 'rhythm' to it (as in keeping time to the spinning CD), then your lens apparatus is either going bad (probably a signal amplifier) or needs cleaning.
2. If it is just a general electrical static sound (sounds like a detuned radio), then it could be the contacts on the back of the CD unit *IF* your CD player is in the seperate housing from the tuner/tape or tuner section. If the CD player is integrated with the tuner section, then there could be a connection inside going bad (corroding?).
I would try to clean the lens with a CD lens cleaner disc, (looks like a CD, has little brushes mounted on it) - can get for under $5. If that doesn't work, try the contact cleaning. If that doesn't work, then send it to saabradio.com or buy a replacement from them. These things are hard to work on yourself.
