Your symptoms sound very familiar to my 89 900TC. Whenever the engine was hot (stop and go traffic, etc.) and I turned the car of for a few minutes (or longer sometimes), it wouldn't start. I would just hear that awfull "click" sound. If I waited a while (for it to cool down?) it would start. Otherwise, I would get someone to jump it and it would start right away. From what I was able to determine it is a bad starter solenoid, which can only be fixed by replacing the whole starter...likely with a rebuilt unit.
Pulling my own and having it rebuilt was a $150 Cdn option. Picking up a rebuilt one at a parts store and leaving my old one behind as a 'core' was about $300 Cdn. Nobody bothered quoting me a 'new' price. I opted for swapping the starters with my 87 900TC that I don't drive much. A real PITA job. Yet another example that Saab seemed to engineer their cars to defeat the do-it-yourselfer any way they could. I remember my Volvo mechanic advising me years ago to steer clear of Saabs. He said Saab were well engineered cars piece by peice, but when they finally assembled everything, Good luck trying to get at it. Boy was he ever right.
The bolts are by no means easy to get at with every hose, wire or whatever directly in the way. Once they are off you can wiggle the starter out from under the intake manifold. My first crack probably took 3+ hours to remove. From what I learned I was able to remove replace both in about 7 hours total. Had the placement been designed to get at it I would say 30 minute job to remove...even for a novice.
Not sure about a 1980 but my 87 & 89 have two fuel pumps. The main one that moves most of the fuel and a much smaller pre-pump that keeps the 'basket' that the main pump draws from full of fuel. When the pre-pump fails, you notice it when there is anywhere from 1/3-1/4 full of fuel in the tank. At this level, the main pump starves for fuel around corners and going up hills, as the pre-pump is no longer keeping the supply of fuel in the 'basket' that the main one draws from. Fairly inexpenisve part but I have never replaced one myself.
Good luck on the repairs
