I recently changed the spark plugs on my 1991 900 SPG, I used some Autolite plugs initially, but they were causing inconsistent idle. So I replaced them with NGK Plugs suggested for city driving. Idle was a bit smoother for a day or so, but then the car started doing it again, still not too bad. Then I filled up my car at Costco with the usual premium. I parked at my friends house. After leaving and coming back the next day, I spotted a large wet-looking spot on the gravel where my car may have been parked. It smelled a lot like gasoline. I just assumed that some of the gasoline may have "threw up" (the parking is at an angle with the gas cap leading downhill) since I had accidentally topped off the gas (never done it before).

The idle has gotten progressively worse, seems to be almost okay when the engine has heated up. But otherwise the idle is bouncing all over from almost stalling to 1200 rpm. Sometimes it will stall while I am cruising in neutral. It also hesitates before its heated up. But then the problem is only reduced when the car is warmed up.

Has anyone else seen a solution to this problem or experienced it? I am thinking the fuel filter could be clogged with crap from the neck of the gas tank. Or the spark plug wires were old and brittle when I moved them around to change the plugs. Or something to do with the throttle body or O2 sensor, but it makes no sense to be that because this immediately happened after changing the spark plugs, and the mysterious tank of gas, then the ambiguous gas on the gravel.
