An 86 16VT engine has been in my 82 (formerly 8V APC turbo) car since April of this year. So far so good. Because time was limited for me to do it, I ended up keeping adapting the original CIS fuel system, and wiring harness to work with the new engine. There's a well known article written by a SAAB guy named Sweeny that has all the technical details for that proceedure if that's something you want to look into. Otherwise, the job is more involved since you're implanting the entire 16V engine electronics. Had I more time, I'd have incorporated everything. As it is, the older CIS fuel system works just fine with this engine. I believe the only adjustment I had to make once it started up was to the idle and air fuel setting, which was too lean after the swap.

Because you have the older front engine mount, you'll either have to weld the 16V mount bracket onto the front of your car, or you can remove the 8V tranny primary gear cover and bolt it onto the 16V tranny. It fits and works just fine. If you're going the route of the older solid mount - with a tranny from 88 and newer, there's an additional (non-essential) bearing that fits on the front of the primary gear shaft which then slips into a slot inside the front casing. Because you have an older tranny, you'll have to remove that bearing before fitting the older case. A simple chore.

The two side engine mounts are the newer hydraulic type. I could have kept the older solid mounts, but I would have had to fit the older engine mount bracket assemblies, a chore I opted not to do. The newer hydraulic mount driver side mates up perfectly with the older chassis, but the passenger side required either removing the rearward bolt on the mount bottom, or drilling a new hole for it on the chassis mount position. Since that's the "pressure side" of the engine (meaning the engine turns in a way so that pressure is always applied downward on that mount), I opted to just cut off the bolt. One appears to be all it needs on that side. An expert SAAB mechanic also approved of that option.

Like I said, so far so good. There are others, mostly on the perfomance side of this BB, who have done this chore as well. Searching past posts will turn up a lot of info. (try searching 16V conversion, 16V transplant, 16V swap, engine swap)
