I recently got an 88 900 turbo automatic saved it from the crusher and did a motor and manual transmission swap. The engine was running great and everything was looking good. I took it for a first test drive and felt a bad flat spot in the steering. The steering was really bad and was making a clunking sound. So I decided that since the power steering servo was good that the problem must be in the power steering rack.
So having a parts car with a good unit I went about the 6 hour job with help and a hydraulic lift. After wasting a Sunday on one of the greasiest jobs I have ever done we put the car back on the ground expecting the problem to be solved. It was not, the steering was still really bad. After calming down I decided to take the kick panel off and check the steering linkage between the steering wheel and the first joint inside the car. I pulled the unit out and something very odd happened. From between the shaft and the metal cage that protects it fell a small torx socket. At first I was like “score free tool” a common prize you find in Saabs all the time with all the black holes that tools fall in to. Then after looking at the unit and finding no problems I reinstalled it and to my surprise the problem was solved the cars steering perfect. So that stupid little torx socket was the only problem. I could not believe it. I probably would have been more upset but having the problem fixed was so nice I didn’t care.
Just goes to show that sometimes the true problem is no where near the obvious and true diagnostic takes time a careful thought and other times its just dumb luck.
