Thanks for the helpful and detailed response. Only one or two of your questions I can answer now but I will check all your other suggestions this weekend.

The engine will speed up on its own while driving. It seems to top out at about 3000 to 3500 RPM.

I am pretty sure the check engine light goes on, but not positive. It tends to be on for a period and then go off.

There doesn't seem to be any binding in the throttle cable or gas pedal.

I am not sure what the AMM is.

Thanks again, this car has been in and out of the local shop three times without a cure and they basically told me the last time they don't know whats wrong. One think they did at first was to replace the AIC valve with a new unit, which did not fix the problem, however the shop thought the new unit was bad and I still have the old one. So I will clean that first. This problem started after I pulled the engine to replace the transmission a year ago, then the car sat for 8 months. So it may be related to the swap, though the same engine came out and went in. The only difference in the wiring was the transmission was 1-2 years older and had a different connection on the transmission case for a reverse switch (I think).
