My 900T has recently started smoking and I’d like to query you all for similar experience and opinions as to the possible cause. First the car, then the condition – ’87 900 Turbo, original engine (never been torn down) with 200K. Turbocharger was replaced about 500 mile ago with a Garrett factory reman that had approx 500-700 miles already logged, so it is known to be a good t/c. Engine is in good condition, oil changed every 3K and even though smoking, still has strong/smooth acceleration. Smoking occurs when getting back on throttle after an extended period of deceleration, such as a long downhill or slowing down for 5-10 seconds or more. What you see is a large blast of blue/white smoke, the longer the decel period the bigger the blast. (It is definitely smoke, not steam.) No smoke under hard acceleration.
Inspecting the plugs showed cyl 1-3 in normal condition, good tan/brown color, no evidence of oil. Cyl 4 is suspect. Plug is black and sooty but not wet or oil fouled. Light amount of oil on the threads. No compression test done but I would be surprised if results were abnormal because of how strong the engine pulls. I suspect valve guides/seals or a broken oil ring.
Any and all comments appreciated.
