Hey John:
I'm in the same boat with my 1990 900 (non-turbo)..246k miles...still not completely convinced I want to take this on, but I can't justify the investment in paying someone to do this either. So I've done a lot of reading on the subject.
From everything I've read and heard from the many members of this BB, this repair DOES indeed look quite straightforward- for many, a weekend job- for me, probably longer as I have the luxury of not having to depend on this car right now (I replaced it recently with a '92 900S Convertible). If I tackle the repair and it goes well, I may make the 1990 my winter car, and use the '92 convertible just in the fair-weather months.
Take a look at the http://www.twinsaabs.com DIY section- it has very good pictures with the step by step. The Townsend motors site is also very good on this subject. Supplemented with the Bentley manual and the many experienced participants here on this BB, and I think the head removal will be straightforward.
The head repair looks to be more complex. A good machine shop recommendation with someone you can trust not to take you for "a ride" on expensive or unnecessary repairs will also be a must.
I'm gathering the tools and materials now, and will likely order the parts and start next weekend. Toolwise- based on the info on the http://www.twinsaabs.com site, it looks like the E16 Torx socket is the most unusual tool required.
Good luck! Let's stay in touch as we tackle this effort, and share notes.
