Hi,

Was wondering if anyone has solved this problem before?

Car: 1991 Saab 900S 2.1L (LH 2.4.2)

When driving around, while letting off the gas to come to stops, the engine will sometimes cut out and stall and the check engine light pops on. You can keep the engine running by stepping on the gas a bit and waiting for the light to out.

I cleared out the ECU codes (after checking them) and went for a drive to reproduce the problem and pinpoint the ECU code(s) that caused the light when the engine stalls. The only error code is: 12221 (No signal from Air Mass Meter, ECU in limp-home mode).

However, I know the that AMM is doing *something*, because:

1) If I disconnect the AAM while the car is idleing, it almost stalls and audibly adjusts to a rougher idle (limp home mode?)

2) +12v on AAM between pin 1 and 5 is ok.

3) +4v burnoff voltage 4 seconds after off works.

4) Visible check of burn-off in AAM turned out ok.

Checking past messages, the suggestion seems to be to check for vacuum leaks around the charcol filter (everything seems ok there..) and to check the AIC valve.

The symptoms seems more like the Automatic Idle Control valve is sticking, but I am confused why the ECU would report a bad AAM if there is an intermittent AIC? I disconnected the AIC valve while the engine was running and it produced an ECU message that indicated an AIC valve problem (as expected), not an AAM problem.

Also, I have tugged and shaken all the wires running to the AMM and the AIC while the engine is idleing to see if infact it was a loose connection, but I can't seem to reproduce the symptom while the car is not moving.

Sorry for the long message. Any ideas?

Thanks!
-Rob
