I just bought a '90 16VB202i 4dr Sdn from a neighbor who had it sitting in his DW for the past year. He told me it had no reverse, it has 1/2 of a reverse(I can tell). So, I just don't park anywhere I have to backup. Things I must replace on my $300 '90 which you also may want to check:
1 - ball joints (all shot)
2 - rebuld trans trans & re-seal entire engine(about $1500 from L&B here in Central VA(best Saab/Volvo mechanic around, all he does http://www.volvobylnb.com
3 - ABS & B-fluid lights stay on sometimes in hot city driving(have to flush & change fluid) maybe replace pressure reg. since lights come on after only 8 rapid pumps
4 - tune up
5 - I have a gas smell in the cabin when it sits for awhile, changed gas cap, still there, not sure what to look for next but so far the car has not spontaneously combusted so I'm not concerned.
6 - SRS light stayed on, my neighbor Phil had it checked when this occurred(his wife drove the car) and a scan turned up nothing, so I did what any true diehard Saab owner would do, I removed the dang bulb!
7 - I have a Summatime odometer, summa tima she works, summa tima she don't! It wasn't working when I got it, played with the cable & trip odo, then it worked for a few hundred miles, just stopped again this week.
I've got the ball joints and will take on that job, not sure if I need the special tool after looking at Dave New's website(dave-new.com). I've changed the motor oil, did a tranny service and input Mobil1 15W50 since it had really crotchety shifts, not it shifts smooth as butter.
I really like my old gray booger, it seems to really move for an old sled and my first Saab, I like it better than my old '89 Volvo 740T and for a 4dr it handles great on the back country roads here.
