I was feeling really good when I got the elbow off of my Turbo in ten minutes. Then I couldn't get a box end wrench to budge the sensor. Went to Pep Boys and bought 2 O2 sensor sockets. Both have the slit down the side. Although this doesn't matter because I already cut the wires. Neither one will clear the bump where the stud goes because the walls of the socket are too thick. It's on there but it won't turn. Does a regular deep 22mm have thinner walls? Or is this where the grinding of the socket comes in? I thought you had to grind the top edge for clearance if you kept the elbow in the car and I figured I solved this problem by pulling it. Do I have to grind the grabbing end of the socket?

Is a 7/8" equal to a 22mm? Old VW book says yes. My friend swears they're different and that the 02 sensor sockets at Pep Boys aren't for Saabs. I think he's crazy, but I needed the ride to Pep Boys. He also has me freaking out about solder. Says solder can mess up the continuity of the black signal wire or something. I don't know if this is what the parts guy told him when he sold him the $180 sensor for his SPG or what.

Haven't soldered since junior high. Anything I need to do specifically? I was going to put heat shrink on all three wires and do the splice as close to the connectors as possible. Is this right?

Finally, both the pre-heater wires are white. Is polarity important? Does it matter which way they are spliced?

Sorry for the paranoid tone of this message. I think I inhaled too much liquid wrench. The elbow is in the garage now bathing in it.
