DON'T USE FOAM SURROUND SPEAKERS!!!

The surround of a speaker is the foam around the outside edge between the speaker cone that moves, and the frame that supports it. Most speaker manufacturers went to foam surround in the eighties, from fabric surrounds used previously. The problem is that foam deteriorates in the environmental extremes the typical car is subjected to. Even in the climate-controlled environment of my living room, my Cerwinn Vega woofers experienced foam rot after 15 years of use. (I had these re-coned at the local stereo shop!)
In the case of the dashboard speakers in SAAB's, well, they sit in direct sunlight most of the time. My 900T C had the Phillips speakers in it. The foam surrounds fell apart, so I replaced them with a set of Kenwood speakers out of the Crutchfield catalog. The Kenwoods I selected have a RUBBER surround, and alumnium woofer cones. Some manufacturers still use fabric surrounds, but they are hard to find. Oddly, the rear speakers, which are not subjected to as much sunlight, are using fabric surrounds, and are still in quite good shape in my car.
