sounds like it could be the AMM (Air Mass Meter). This is the small black box just after your air filter box (I think thats where it is on a n/a). Theres a slightly large connector that attaches to it and looks similar to an older printer cable connection.

My car acted the same way about a month, it barely wanted to start and idled horribly. I had my father take the car to our local mechanic, and he said it ran crappy, and then he stopped to get gas and 5 miles later it ran great. The mechanic checked it out and thought it was fine. I never replaced the AMM and it has been running fine (knock, knock, knock) since. You should also buy some Techron and add it to you next tank of gas.

Search this BB for rough idle, AMM, etc. There are tons of posts on this. I would probably rule out the AIC (Automatic Idle Control) as the car would still run decently if this was dirty/bad.

I'd pick the car up from the dealer unless its a SAAB dealer, then I'd question their knowledge.

It could also be a head gasket but doesn't really sound like it as the CE light probably wouldn't illuminate. Another thought could be an O2 sensor.
