I do not have answer yet but my car, a 1987 900 16v turbo, had a similiar scenario last week. I had it towed home and was able to start it a couple of times and idle fine but could not rev it. It would die and not start. I used timing light and does not appear to have spark to after it dies. I did a fuel pump check it seemed OK. The no start problem is intermittent. Some times it will start and sometimes not. The last time I had it running the APC solenoid was 'chattering' a lot like you describe. It would not start last night. I did discover late last night that my 'hooter' valve is bad. I do not know if the 'hooter valve' can cause a no spark, no start problem. I may have more then one problem. The Bentley manual indicates that the 86 and 87 model have an ignition pulse amplifier on the main fuse relay panel. It can create a no start situation. However, to bypass the relay it says to jumper TD-0 and TD-I. Mine has a TD-0 and TD-J. I am hesitant to jumper things that I am not sure of; it can sometimes cause additional and more expensive problems. Sorry, I do not have answer for you but I hope this gives you some things to check.
